RESUMO

PURPOSE: To analyze the shoulder alterations of professional tennis players during the competition season and to compare the differences between their dominant vs. non-dominant shoulders, as well as gender and age differences. METHODS: Two-hundred and seventy shoulders of (78 men and 57 women) professional active tennis players were assessed during 3 ATP and WTA tournaments. MAIN VARIABLES STUDIED: long head of biceps (LHB) tenderness and synovitis; glenohumeral internal rotation deficit (GIRD), total range of motion (TRM), external rotation (ER) and scapular dyskinesis (DK). Secondary variables: shoulder dominance, gender, age, training hours, ranking, type of backhand. LHB tenderness and synovitis were assessed by clinical and ultrasound examination, TRM with goniometer and DK by dynamic observation. RESULTS: LHB tenderness of the dominant shoulder was present in 35% of all players, being more prevalent in women (47.4%) than men (26.9%) p = 0.023. LHB synovitis of the dominant shoulder was present in 20.2% of all players without difference between genders (n.s). High prevalence of GIRD was found in both dominant (87.4%) and non-dominant (56.3%) shoulders, being more prevalent in the dominant shoulder p = 0.00005. TRM was decreased in both dominant (144.5° ± 20.2°) and non-dominant shoulders (161.2° ± 18.9°) p = 0.00005. ER was normal in dominant (93.8° + /9.3°) and non-dominant shoulders (93.4° + /8.4°) (n.s). DK was present in 57.7% of dominant and 45.9% of non-dominant shoulders (n.s). The combination of LHB alterations, GIRD and DK in the dominant shoulder was present in 13.3% of the participants. There were no significant differences between younger (< 22 years) vs older players (≥ 22 years). CONCLUSION: Professional tennis players actively playing suffer a high prevalence of LHB inflammation, GIRD, scapular dyskinesis and decreased TRM in their dominant and non-dominant shoulders. The LHB is a significant cause for anterior shoulder pain in this population. Women suffer more LHB tenderness than men. Young players are as affected as older players. LEVEL OF EVIDENCE: Level IV.

RESUMO

The work assesses the performance of nanocarriers from amphiphilic block copolymers with functional azobenzene or coumarin moieties for delivery of paclitaxel. Placlitaxel was encapsulated by the nanoprecipitation method. Characterisations were performed by DLS, TEM, Zeta potential and HPLC. Cell viability was investigated in HeLa and Huh-5-2-cell lines. Coumarin-containing polymeric micelles (Dh = 26 ± 2 nm, PDI = 0.28, ζ = ‒22.9 ± 3.6 mV) with 11.2 ± 0.5%w/w drug loading showed enhanced cytotoxicity in HeLa cells (IC50 < 0.02 nM) compared to free paclitaxel (IC50 = 0.17 ± 0.02 nM). Azobenzene-containing polymeric vesicles (Dh = 390 ± 20 nm, PDI = 0.24, ζ = ‒33.2 ± 5.0 mV) with a 6.8 ± 0.4%w/w drug loading showed increased cytotoxicity under 530 nm light (IC50 = 0.0114 ± 0.00033 nM) in HeLa cells due to a stimulated delivery of paclitaxel. Effectivity of these block copolymers as paclitaxel nanovectors and light stimulated release has been demonstrated.

RESUMO

A study of the solution-phase, solid-state structures of halogen-bonded co-crystals of 1,4-bis(iodoethynyl)benzene (p-BIB) with three salts, namely, decyltrimethylammonium bromide (DTMABr), tetrapropylammonium bromide (TPABr), and tetrabutylammonium bromide (TBABr), has been carried out, along with theoretical calculations. Isothermal titration calorimetry (ITC) showed that the binding constant of bromide with p-BIB in THF is not strongly dependent on the cation, and that the entropic term clearly dominates the enthalpic one in the free energy of binding. In the three crystal structures, the bromide anion acts as a doubly connected node for halogen bonding interactions, which results in linear or angular open chains. The intrachain angles (IBr-I) of the 1D supramolecular polymers based on p-BIB depend on the geometry and size of the cation and vary from 180° for DMTABr to 75° for TBABr. Non-covalent interaction (NCI) analysis of selected motifs and optimized crystals demonstrates that the balance between halogen bonds, hydrogen bonds, and van der Waals interactions, especially type-I halogenhalogen contacts, determines the crystal structures.

RESUMO

Most of reported polymeric light-responsive nanocarriers make use of UV light to trigger morphological changes and the subsequent release of encapsulated cargoes. Moving from UV- to visible-responsive units is interesting for the potential biomedical applications of these materials. Herein we report the synthesis by ring opening polymerization (ROP) of a series of amphiphilic diblock copolymers, into which either UV or visible responsive azobenzenes have been introduced via copper(I) catalyzed azide-alkyne cycloaddition (CuAAC). These copolymers are able to self-assemble into spherical micelles or vesicles when dispersed in water. The study of the response of the self-assemblies upon UV (365 nm) or visible (530 or 625 nm) light irradiation has been studied by Transmission Electron Microscopy (TEM), Cryogenic Transmission Electron Microscopy (Cryo-TEM), and Dynamic Light Scattering (DLS) studies. Encapsulation of Nile Red, in micelles and vesicles, and Rhodamine B, in vesicles, and its light-stimulated release has been studied by fluorescence spectroscopy and confocal microscopy. Appreciable morphological changes have been induced with green light, and the subsequent release of encapsulated cargoes upon green light irradiation has been confirmed.

RESUMO

This paper describes the synthesis, thermal characterization and optical properties of liquid crystalline homopolymers and block copolymers with a repeating unit consisting of two functional units, with at least one of them being an azobenzene. Films of these polymers have been irradiated with circularly polarized light at room temperature, evaluating the intensity of the photoinduced chiral signal and its temporal stability upon storage. The paper also explores two different strategies to restrict the relaxation of the photoinduced order. Firstly, block copolymers have been prepared to confine the photoaddressable segments into nanoscopic domains where relaxation should be restricted. Secondly, an alternative homopolymer has been synthesized where the repeating unit combines two chromophores that can be separately photoaddressed, an azobenzene unit to efficiently photoinduce chirality and a cinnamate to fix the chiral signal by photocrosslinking.

RESUMO

The aim of the present study was to determine 1) whether deficits in two mindfulness dimensions (present-centered awareness and acceptance) were present in individuals with different psychiatric conditions and 2) whether co-existing depressive symptoms affected the mindfulness-related capacities in these groups. A total of 246 individuals, both clinical and non-clinical participants, were included in this study. The clinical sample consisted of 162 individuals; of these, 43 had a diagnosis of cocaine dependence while the remaining 119met clinical criteria for eating disorders (n = 43), major depressive disorder in remission (n = 39), and borderline personality disorder (n = 45). A non-clinical (NC) community sample consisting of 76 individuals was included as a control group. All participants completed self-report instruments to assess present-centered awareness, acceptance, and depressive symptoms. Present-centered awareness scores were significantly associated with depressive symptoms but not with the diagnostic group. By contrast, a significant effect of depressive symptoms and diagnostic group was associated with acceptance scores, with all clinical groups presenting significantly lower scores than the NC sample. These findings suggest that the association between psychopathology, mindfulness, and depressive symptoms varies depending on the specific aspect of mindfulness aspect (i.e., awareness or acceptance) evaluated.

RESUMO

INTRODUCTION: Numerous studies have evaluated the efficacy and safety of varenicline for smoking cessation in smokers in the general population and, to a lesser extent, among the psychiatric population. However, few studies have evaluated varenicline in patients with other addictions. The present study was conducted to assess outcomes of a multimodal treatment for smoking cessation intervention with varenicline in a sample of alcohol and substance use disorders and patients with psychotic disorders. METHODS: This was a prospective, multicenter study. The patient sample comprised alcoholics in remission, methadone-maintained patients, and patients with psychotic disorders, all of whom wanted to stop smoking. All participants received multimodal treatment for smoking cessation therapy (psychological therapy plus varenicline). Smoking abstinence and changes in the psychopathological state of patients were assessed at predefined time points during a 12-month follow-up. The probability of tobacco abstinence after one year of treatment was computed using Kaplan-Meier life tables. RESULTS: The probability of abstinence at one year was 0.225 (95% CI: 0.1430-0.319). By group, the probabilities were as follows: patients with psychotic disorders 0.254 (95% CI: 0.118-0.415); alcoholics 0.237 (95% CI: 0.098-0.409); and methadone-maintained patients 0.177 (95% CI: 0.065-0.335). Patients with previous quit attempts had a higher probability of achieving abstinence at one year (p<0.01). CONCLUSIONS: The results of this study support the use of multimodal treatment with varenicline in patients with alcohol addiction in remission, patients on methadone maintenance, and patients with stable psychotic disorders. Previous smoking cessation attempts were predictive of smoking cessation success in these patients.

RESUMO

Chiral photoinduction in a photoresponsive gel based on an achiral 2D architecture with high geometric anisotropy and low roughness has been investigated. Circularly polarized light (CPL) was used as a chiral source and an azobenzene chromophore was employed as a chiral trigger. The chiral photoinduction was studied by evaluating the preferential excitation of enantiomeric conformers of the azobenzene units. Crystallographic data and density functional theory (DFT) calculations show how chirality is transferred to the achiral azomaterials as a result of the combination of chiral photochemistry and supramolecular interactions. This procedure could be applied to predict and estimate chirality transfer from a chiral physical source to a supramolecular organization using different light-responsive units.

Introduction. The Philadelphia Mindfulness Scale (PHLMS) is a brief questionnaire for assessing 2 key components of mindfulness: present moment awareness, and acceptance. This study was aimed at evaluating the psychometric properties of the Spanish version of PHLMS in a sample of participants with and without psychiatric conditions. Material and methods. The Spanish version of the PHLMS was administered to a sample of 395 volunteers (256 of them with a psychiatric condition, and 130 from a student sample). Results. Exploratory factor analysis found a two factor solution, which was also observed in the original version of the scale, with an explained variance of 44.02%. The scale showed good reliability (Cronbach α between 0.81 and 0.86), and an adequate convergent validity with other questionnaires of mindfulness and acceptance. The results also showed a similar discriminant validity to that in the original instrument validation between PHLMS and the clinical symptomatology reported. Conclusions. The Spanish version of the PHLMS is a psychometrically sound measure for assessing two core components of mindfulness (i.e. awareness and acceptance) in clinical and research settings (AU)

RESUMO

Decentering is defined as the ability to observe one's thoughts and feelings in a detached manner. The Experiences Questionnaire (EQ) is a self-report instrument that originally assessed decentering and rumination. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the psychometric properties of the Spanish version of EQ-Decentering and to explore its clinical usefulness. The 11-item EQ-Decentering subscale was translated into Spanish and psychometric properties were examined in a sample of 921 adult individuals, 231 with psychiatric disorders and 690 without. The subsample of nonpsychiatric participants was also split according to their previous meditative experience (meditative participants, n=341; and nonmeditative participants, n=349). Additionally, differences among these three subgroups were explored to determine clinical validity of the scale. Finally, EQ-Decentering was administered twice in a group of borderline personality disorder, before and after a 10-week mindfulness intervention. Confirmatory factor analysis indicated acceptable model fit, sbχ(2)=243.8836 (p<.001), CFI=.939, GFI=.936, SRMR=.040, and RMSEA=.06 (.060-.077), and psychometric properties were found to be satisfactory (reliability: Cronbach's α=.893; convergent validity: r>.46; and divergent validity: r<-.35). The scale detected changes in decentering after a 10-session intervention in mindfulness (t=-4.692, p<.00001). Differences among groups were significant (F=134.8, p<.000001), where psychiatric participants showed the lowest scores compared to nonpsychiatric meditative and nonmeditative participants. The Spanish version of the EQ-Decentering is a valid and reliable instrument to assess decentering either in clinical and nonclinical samples. In addition, the findings show that EQ-Decentering seems an adequate outcome instrument to detect changes after mindfulness-based interventions.

RESUMO

The large and reversible photoinduced linear and circular birefringences in azo-compounds are at the basis of the interest in these materials, which are potentially useful for several applications. Since the onset of the linear and circular anisotropies relies on orientational processes, which typically occur on the molecular and supramolecular length scale, respectively, a circular birefringence at least one order of magnitude lower than the linear one is usually observed. Here, the synthesis and characterization of an amorphous polymer with a dimeric repeating unit containing a cyanoazobenzene and a cyanobiphenyl moiety are reported, in which identical optical linear and circular birefringences are induced for proper light dose and ellipticity. A pump-probe technique and an analytical method based on the Stokes-Mueller formalism are used to investigate the photoinduced effects and to evaluate the anisotropies. The peculiar photoresponse of the polymer makes it a good candidate for applications in smart functional devices.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) is highly prevalent among drug abusers. We studied the psychiatric comorbidity and characteristics of cocaine use in relation to the presence of ADHD among patients with cocaine dependence. METHODS: A total of 200 cocaine-dependent patients attending an Outpatient Drug Clinic participated in the study. A systematic evaluation of ADHD (CAADID-II), the severity of addiction (EuropASI) and other axes I and II psychiatric disorders was made (SCID-I and SCID-II). A descriptive, bivariate, and multivariate analysis of the data was performed. RESULTS: In the multivariate analysis, the identified risk factors for the development of ADHD were a history of behavioral disorder in childhood (OR: 3.04), a lifetime history of cannabis dependence in the course of life (OR: 2.68), and age at the start of treatment (OR: 1.08). The bivariate analysis showed ADHD to be associated with other factors such as male gender, age at start of cocaine use and dependence, the amount of cocaine consumed weekly, increased occupational alteration, alcohol consumption, general psychological discomfort, depressive disorder, and antisocial personality disorder. CONCLUSIONS AND SCIENTIFIC SIGNIFICANCE: We conclude that ADHD is associated with increased psychiatric comorbidity and greater severity of addiction.

RESUMO

Achiral compounds 4-methoxy-4-(p-methoxyphenyl)cyclohexanoneethylene ketal (2), 4-hydroxy-4-(p-methoxy phenyl)cyclohexanoneethylene ketal (3), and 3,5-dimethyl-4-nitropyrazole (4) crystallized in chiral structures and the samples showed an enantiomeric excess. We have determined the absolute structures of these compounds by using X-ray diffraction with copper radiation at low temperatures. Moreover, we have also established the prevalent absolute structures in these samples, by comparing their calculated and solid-state vibrational circular dichroism (VCD) spectra. The consistency of this method was confirmed by using (R,R)-2,8-diiodo-4,10-dimethyl-6 H,12H-5,11-methano-dibenzo[b,f][1,5]diazocine, Tröger's base, (R,R)-1, as a chiral compound of known absolute configuration.

RESUMO

A set of chiral discotic phenylacetylenes have been synthesized by 3-fold Sonogashira coupling between different ethynylbenzenes and triiodobenzenes. The resultant bulk materials are fully characterized by polarized optical microscopy (POM), differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), and X-ray diffraction. The octopolar nature of the target compounds is studied by UV-vis absorption spectroscopy and hyper-Raleigh scattering in solution. Optimization of the donor-acceptor substitution yields both high hyperpolarizability values and appreciable mesomorphic properties. A simple thin film device for second harmonic generation has been prepared from the nitro-substituted liquid crystalline derivative.

RESUMO

The Mindful Attention Awareness Scale (MAAS) is a brief and easy to administer scale that mainly assesses the individual's dispositional capacity to be aware and conscious in day-to-day life experiences. This is a 15-item self-reported single-factor scale that is exclusively focused on attention/awareness component of mindfulness construct. The instrument can be independently used to assess individuals either with or without meditation experience and has been widely used in mindfulness research. In order to establish the psychometric proprieties of the MAAS a total of 385 individuals were assessed. 201 individuals came from a clinical sample and 184 control individuals were university students. The MAAS showed good psychometric proprieties in terms of validity and reliability. The scale obtained an adequate convergent validity with the Five Facets Mindfulness Questionnaire (FFMQ) and good discriminating validity with relation to depressive symptoms. Additionally, the MAAS obtained good reliability indexes (Cronbach's α = 0.89), good temporal stability and adequately replicates the original single-factor structure accounting for 42.8% of the total variance. These results were comparable to those obtained by the original English version of the scale. MAAS can be briefly administered and enables us to measure the individual's frequency of mindfulness states in daily life and can be used both on clinical research and healthy subjects.

The achiral 4-methoxy-4-(p-methoxyphenyl)-cyclohexanone ethylene ketal (1) resolves spontaneously. The crystal structure is solved in chiral spatial group P2(1). Because compound 1 is composed of only light atoms (C, H, O) it is not possible to determine its absolute structure configuration. An efficient procedure for the absolute structure configuration determination of flexible molecules containing only light atoms is proposed, based on the combination of X-ray diffraction, solid-state VCD, and DFT calculations.

RESUMO

The synthesis of chiral liquid-crystalline polymers of well-controlled structure (linear and three-armed star-shaped) with distinct average chain lengths and low polydispersity was achieved by atom transfer radical polymerisation (ATRP) of a new optically active monomer (S)-4-[6-(2-methacryloyloxypropanoyloxy)hexyloxy)]-4'-ethoxyazobenzene [(S)-ML6A], containing the L-lactic residue of one absolute configuration in the side-chain. All the obtained polymeric samples, characterised by differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), X-ray diffraction (XRD) and polarised optical microscopy (POM), exhibit a smectic A(1/2) (fully interdigitated) liquid-crystalline phase and high cleaning points, with transition temperatures dependent on the average polymerisation degree and the macromolecular structure. The chirality originated at the molecular level by the asymmetric functionality of the L-lactic acid residue provides the polymers, in the smectic phase, of highly homogeneous conformations with a prevailing chirality related to the presence of H-aggregates having conformational dissymmetry of one prevailing screw-sense. By irradiating with circularly polarised light (CPL), it is possible to photomodulate the chiroptical properties of these intrinsically chiral polymeric thin films. Upon irradiation with left-handed CPL (l-CPL), the circular dichroism (CD) spectra of the films show enhancement of ellipticity and a net inversion of sign. The effect is reversible and the mirror image of the CD spectrum can be restored by pumping with right-handed CPL radiation (r-CPL). The results show the ability of l-CPL to invert the supramolecular chirality of the materials and demonstrate the essential role of azoaromatic aggregates.
